Have you ever gone on a trip, sad and heartbroken because you could not take your beloved pet along? In addition, you will be most likely returning home to a sulking pet. Furry friends are an integral part of the family and planning a trip without them can pose a serious dilemma. How can you have fun alone, having left a little piece of your heart behind? A few basic rules in mind and you can have a fun & rewarding trip with your best friend.

Plan your road trip in detail
Take them on a series of short drives, gradually increasing the length of the drive to make them comfortable. Feed your pet at least 3 to 4 hours before your departure. Never leave them alone in a locked car. Keep all the necessary items like travel papers, a waste scoop, emergency medication, first aid kit handy. Carry your pet’s favorite stuffed toy handy to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

Time your breaks
Animals cannot control their bladders for too long. So you have to make sure to take breaks at regular intervals. The beginning of road trips can also stress an animal out. So it is essential to watch out for signs of distress. Keep a supply of fresh drinking water every time you take a break.

Keep a leash handy
An animal can react spontaneously to sights or sounds that are alien to them. They have an inquisitive nature and their natural reaction would be to investigate the source of the smell or sound. Hence it is highly recommended to keep them on a leash because even the most trained pet can behave in an unusual way when agitated.

Find pet-friendly hotels
Nowadays most hotels are pet-friendly and offer exclusive services specially designed for your furry mate. Do extensive research and select hotels that are close to the location of the activities your pet likes. If your pet enjoys hiking find a hotel close to a mountain and if they like to swim find a spot close to a water body.

Make the most of the trip & take a lot of pictures
Going on a trip research all the places you could visit activities your pet would love. Dogs especially will love going on a hike or swim. Every animal has a distinct personality and their pictures reflect that. Take as many “selfies” with your best friend and make the most of your time with them. Make memories that will last a lifetime!
